A legion of ancient evil trapped one man, exiling him to tombs of darkness and shame. His days and nights were consumed by a never ending torture, one that he tried in vain to silence through self-mutilation. The outcast known for centuries as The Maniac was forsaken by an entire nation, including the ones he loved the most. He lived in hopeless despair, sorrow that nearly pulled him into the edges of eternity until the day that The Nazarene arrived on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, bringing redemption with him.
The chains were broken. His sanity was restored. His scars of guilt and shame were covered, and he at last found rest in the salvation offered only through the man called Christ. But what happened when Jesus and his disciples left? What became of the man that was told simply "Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee?"
What difficulties did this once possessed man face as he made the lonely walk back into the village, absent from the presence of his Savior? How many shunned him? Was he mocked? Chased away by the very people that once called him brother, son, friend? This speculative look into the journey taken by a man set free from the bondage of sin walks the line between fear and faith, exploring the depths of man's depravity and God's forgiveness. Who, or what, will conquer in the end?

Jesus casting out the demons called Legion is a story often told merely in a series of other stories while moving through the New Testament, but in The Gadarene Chad Pettit imagines what the days after that miracle would be like for the man who had been freed from that possession.Though freed, the man still known as Legion struggles to still the echo of those voices in his head and to see himself as worthy of returning to his family and reclaiming his humanity. And once he leaves his cave, he is met with the fear and hatred that his actions had caused while he had been possessed. When confronted with the parents he had harmed and the brother who had cast him out, he has only his memory of Jesus and the advice of a stranger following in Jesus' path.
While the story of Legion is a familiar one, this treatment was a new way to look beyond the usual telling and to contemplate what was left of the man and how he coped with the gift of freedom Jesus gave him. At turns thought provoking and exciting, this is a telling that will stir the reader's emotions. A very interesting take and a well written quick read at only 91 pages.
Recommended for fans of biblical retellings and tales of the aftermath of "madness" and miracles.

it made me cry
I can almost feel like I was there observing them as the story unfolds . Great story telling ! I love it
All the vivid pictures painted by this author emerse you deep within the story. There is no doubt when reading this book you feel like you are truly a spectacle, witnessing the event in person. Get ready for a enjoying emotion stirring read. (Keep some tissues on hand)
Chad Pettit’s use of imagery and acute awareness of the uniquely human experiences we all know but can’t describe are what make this an incredible and insatiable read. In this flash of a novella, we meet a character often skimmed over in the Bible, who was one of the precious few in human history to actually experience the physical touch of the Savior. The Gadarene will leave you spiritually refreshed and diving into the next book in this redeeming storyline.
I have always imagined that this man was received back into his family with joy and unbelievable relief. That the effectiveness of his sharing his testimony came strong. The author has so effectively portrayed the natural reaction of a family and community long traumatised, and the courage it takes to speak of Jesus to a hostile world.
As Christians, we all likely know the miracle Jesus performed when He cast the demons out of the man and into the pigs and tells the man to go back and tell people what He did. But have you ever thought about what that entailed? What it was like for this man to go try and tell about Christ’s miracle? Chad Petit has created a fictional account of what that might have looked like - and his story, though short, brought me to tears. Christ never said our lives as Christians would be easy, but He did say He’d be with us every step of the way and I think Chad has fantastically brought this biblical fiction to life to highlight that very promise from God.
If you enjoy Christian fiction, THE GADARENE by Chad Pettit will be a good read for you. I really enjoyed it. I read it in one evening (it's only 91 pgs). Such an unusual topic the man in the tombs that Jesus delivered from demonic spirits. The story, however, is not just the deliverance. Did you ever wonder whatever happened to the man after Jesus told him he could not follow Him but to go home and tell people what had happened? Not something he would look forward to after years of his evil actions and shame. Pettit writes an excellent fictional account of what the Gadarene man might have encountered. It's very interesting and provides a lot to think about.
